About The Messy Table

The Messy Table creates spaces where people can explore the realities of life and death with courage, creativity, and compassion.
Through art, story, and shared conversation, we help people find meaning in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of being human.

Around the table, we use art, colour, and storytelling to open space for the conversations that too often feel impossible — about meaning, care, and legacy. Here, glue sticks, paint, and prayer often share the same space. The goal isn’t tidy answers; it’s the courage to show up, create, and be heard.

Our Approach: No Barriers Here

Our workshops are grounded in the No Barriers Here © Mary Stevens Hospice (UK) approach — a creative and inclusive method for exploring life, death, and end-of-life care planning.
Developed to make these conversations accessible for everyone, No Barriers Here uses art-based facilitation to help participants reflect on:

• Identity — who we are and what gives our lives meaning.
• Care — the people, values, and places that matter most when we think about care and support.
• Legacy — how we wish to be remembered and the stories we want to leave behind.

Through these themes, participants create artwork that becomes a personal expression of what matters most — a visual and emotional starting point for deeper reflection or care planning.

Our role as trained facilitators is to hold the space gently: to listen, guide, and make room for laughter, tears, and stillness. Every session is unique, because every story is.

Talking about death doesn’t diminish life, it illuminates it.
When we create room for these conversations, we often discover gratitude, healing, and connection we didn’t expect.
